Street signs salute AHEPA
Written by AHEPA
Merrillville, IN—Presenting one of the signs to AHEPA membership are, from left, Town Administrator Howard Fink, AHEPA President Louis Gikas, Committee Chairman George Pietris, Merrillville Clerk-Treasurer Eugene Guernsey and AHEPA member and Lake County Treasurer John Petalas.
Through the initiative of Merrillville’s Ward 3 Town Councilwoman Carol Miano, the town will place several “Honorary AHEPA Lane” street signs at locations near the AHEPA Apartments located along West 79th Place and at 8050 Madison St. The American Hellenic Education Progressive Association, Gary/Merrillville chapter 78, provides affordable housing to low-income senior residents in six buildings. AHEPA 78 was established in Gary in 1925 and the AHEPA Housing program started in Merrillville in 1993 with the first building offering 50 resident apartments. The most recent building added in Phase VI was occupied in May, 2009, bringing the total apartment count to 300.
