DES PLAINES, ILL.--- The Philoptochos of Saint John the Baptist Church in Des Plaines, Ill. will host “Have a Heart to Make a House a Home,” at the church on March 12, to benefit the new Martha & Mary Maternity House, the first Orthodox home of its kind in the Midwest and one of very few in the Chicagoland area. The new home will help women who choose life for their unborn children.

 On Friday, Feb. 15, from 5 pm to 9 pm, River North gallery Hilton|Asmus Contemporary presents “PIXELS,” an exhibition of paintings & sculptures by Greek artist Kostis Georgiou. Georgiou will fly to Chicago from Athens for the opening reception following a yearlong, five-museum tour in China.

Children of Greece Luncheon a success

Eleni Bousis, Eleni Tzotzolis along with their families and dedicated committee, extend a heartfelt thank you to the many supporters who contributed in making this worthy event a great success.  With your assistance we collected over $100,000 at the luncheon and continue to receive contributions.  Held on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Chateau Ritz Banquets of Niles, Illinois this wonderful benefit was attended by over 500 kind hearted guests that came together in the true spirit of Christmas and gave generously for this worthwhile endeavor.

James M. Mezilson: 1919-2013

James M. Mezilson (Meziltzolgou) was born in Chicago in 1919 to Greek immigrants from Eastern Thrace.  He was well known in the community from his years as a journalist for the Greek Press and the Sun and his involvement in the Sons of Pericles organization.

ST. LOUIS—Members of the St. Louis community filled the house as they were invited to honor —and to contribute to University of Missouri-St. Louis and the Hellenic Spirit Foundation scholarship program—at the sixth annual Athena Awards at the beautiful Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis.

GWUC Awards Four Scholarships

Four scholarships for academic achievement were awarded during the Greek Women’s University Club (GWUC) Scholarship Brunch on January 6 at Grotto’s Italian Steakhouse in Oak Brook, Illinois.  

The New Tegean Society & Tegean Youth held their Christmas Party on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Chateau Ritz, in Niles. Guests of all ages gathered together to celebrate the Holiday Season. Two centenarians were honored, and scholarships were awarded to three young Tegeans for their outstanding academic achievement.

SKOKIE, ILL. --- Coming Together in Skokie (CTIS) will honor the Greek culture this year. The official kick-off of the six-week series of programs is Sunday, January 27 at Niles West High School, 5701 W. Oakton Street, Skokie. Members of the Greek community are proud to present cultural and art exhibits and refreshments at 2 p.m., followed at 3 p.m. by a cultural program that includes an original short video, skits, lively music and dances, as well as Greek hors d’oeuvres. The emcee is Jane Monzures, TV/radio personality, current host of Living Healthy Chicago on WGN TV.

The Orpheus Hellenic Folklore Society participated for the sixth year in a row at the annual McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade.

Students hold Mock Presidential Election

On Tuesday, November 6, the Hellenic American Academy’s Socrates Day School held a mock presidential election which emphasized the importance of democracy and the role of the informed citizen.
