Yiayia’s Rules on How To Eat

Hello friends!  Welcome to my new column at The Greek Star!  I was born in Los Angeles, California to Greek parents—an Athenian father, with my mother’s side from Methana (near Hydra and Spetses).  I led a typical Greek life; Yiayia lived with us, mom cooked mostly Greek foods, dad never let me wear makeup, and my little brother always kept a “watchful eye” over me.

I became fascinated with foods at a very young age.  I’d ask Yiayia why she would drink that “green-icky-juice” from boiling horta before I probably even knew how to write my own name.  She’d always reserve a tiny bit for me to drink, knowing I was secretly fascinated by the color and taste.  Mom would make us eat seafood stew in the winter months because Yiayia told her it would keep us healthy during the school year.

The backbone of our Greek heritage is food.  My writing mainly focuses on food, health, nutrition, diet and longevity—I look forward to sharing my knowledge with our community!

Buying Greek makes good sense

In my last article I wrote about how my family used to drive between Chicago and Florida every year and how we would have to bring along our Greek staples of wine, cheese, lamb and olive oil.
