A few moments of reflection

“What I desire is that you fix your eyes every day on the greatness of Athens and fall in love with her.…Mighty indeed are the marks and monuments of our empire which we have left. Future ages will wonder at us, as the present age wonders at us now.” These words were addressed to Athenians by the great general and statesman Pericles in the year 432 B.C., when the city-state he led could boast colonies and tribute-paying allies from as far afield as Sicily in the west and the Black Sea in the east.
