Welcome to The Greek Star!

Founded by Peter Lambros, The Greek Star is the oldest Greek-American newspaper, publishing in Chicago, IL without interruption since 1904. This year, 2009, The Greek Star celebrates 105 years of Greek-American journalism.

In the early stages, The Greek Star filled a very basic and fundamental need in the lives of the immigrants by providing them with news of Greece.

It was in the 1940s that the Fasseas family acquired The Greek Star and in 1954 hired the late Nicholas Philippidis as editor. The newspaper enabled Hellenes to learn about one another and keep in touch through the newspaper. Published in Greek into the late 1960s, Mr. Philippidis lent support through The Greek Star to church, community, and cultural activities and in the early 1970s, fought for the "Rule of Law" in American policy towards Cyprus. The Greek Star ensured the widest possible impact on American policy by placing every member of Congress on its mailing list.

From the time of the Cypriot invasion in 1974, The Greek Star became a subscription newspaper and the strongest link outside the church, tying individuals to their ethnicity. In 1985, Peter Fasseas passed the newspaper on to the United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC). Through UHAC, Mr. Fasseas saw an organization that united all aspects of the Greek-American community under one umbrella. In addition, UHAC represents an organization that not only serves the community, but also has the capacity and the ability to maintain and continues to serve that unifying characteristic of the community.

With UHAC Communications, Inc., as publisher The Greek Star aims to provide its readers with a sense of connection and pride to their ethnic origins.
